Abstract:
This layer shows the ponding basins of Guam, which are mostly located in northern Guam. The features were digitzed on-screen by visual interpretation of up-to-date source layers, primarily LiDAR-derived surface raster layers and satellite imagery (2011). An older dataset created by the Water and Environmental Research Institute around 1998 was used as a starting point. Note that many ponding basins may have originated as natural features (karst sinkholes) whose contours have been altered. This dataset may not be complete. Most features were also not verified in the field.

To show the location of ponding basins on Guam. GIS data inventory of the Government of Guam.

Data are believed to be logically consistent. Ponding basins were identified using LiDAR (2007)-derived raster and for additional verification, WorldView2 imagery by Digital Globe from 2011. A dataset created by WERI (no metadata was available) was added (55 feature points). All points were checked against the LiDAR data for verification, two points were deleted because they did not show up in either LiDAR or satellite imagery. Few ponding basins were identified using only WorldView2 imagery (e.g., near airport and Home Depot) because were excavated after 2007, hence not existing in the LiDAR data.

Ponding basin shapefile was obtained from UOG-WERI but not metadata information was available. It is very likely that the original file was created as part of an urban runoff project by Denton et al. in 1998 (see source information).

Ponding basins were primarily identified using various LiDAR (2007)-derived raster layers. In addition, satellite imagery QuickBird (2005) and WorldView2 (2011) by Digital Globe were used for verification. No distinction was made if man-made or natural. Some ponding basins may be natural sinkholes or other natural depressions. Other than location and source, no additional attributes have been added. The dataset will be updated and expanded as part of an Guam Hydrologic Survey (GHS) project involving delineation of sinkholes and other depressions (2013-2014).
