Caves (fundamental types and approximate locations)

About this map:

This map shows the approximate locations of caves in southern Guam and distinguishes between two main genetic types: vadose caves (created by dissolution above the water table) and phreatic caves (created by dissolution under saturated conditions). The geospatial data were based on Taboroši, D. (2002), Karst features of Guam [MSc thesis], University of Guam, Mangilao, 324 pp. The indicated locations of caves are approximate. Caves were originally identified in the field and their approximate locations were subsequently noted on topographic maps. Due to most cave entrances being in remote locations under thick canopy or bases of tall cliffs, GPS units were not utilized at the time of fieldwork. The points labeled on maps were later digitized into a series of GIS shapefiles, which were compiled, projected where necessary, and compared to create the master-file used for this map.
